“We make a living by what we get; we make a life by what we give.”
Winston Churchill
Everyday, the staff of The Coastal Companies work passionately and diligently to help others live rewarding lifestyles along the North Carolina coast. What you may not know is how many members of our staff lend their time and talents to worthy causes.
Laura Shaurer, Property Manager and Broker-in-Charge at Coastal Vacation Resorts on Oak Island, is a certified master diver who spends every Sunday volunteering at the N.C. Aquarium at Fort Fisher as a member of their well-known and popular dive team. These volunteers participate in 2 dives per day, 364 days a year, answering questions from visitors to the N.C. Aquarium and educating them about the varied habitats under the sea. With over 25 years experience as a certified diver, Laura also participates in Project Aware, counting fish populations in offshore waters. She has been in dives all over the world, including the Great Barrier Reef and the Belizean Shores. “In comparison,” she said, “the waters off-shore in North Carolina have some of the most diverse species.”
Rich Melcher, our IT Manager, is an active participant with Love-n-Care Ministries, an international ministry dedicated to sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ by planting churches, discipling Christians, training pastors, promoting revival, and meeting needs. The focus of these ministries is in Andhra Pradesh, India, where Rich made his first trip in January of 2008, accompanied by several members of Generations Church (which meets at Surf Cinemas in Southport). While there, Rich shared his expertise with computers and technical issues. He also donated laptops to local Pastors and trained them to use search and study tools with Bible software. The visiting group also spent their time deciding how to expand their partnership with the churches in India. Rich excitedly reported that during their visit, they witnessed several baptisms. The church plans to return to India soon to continue their support of the ministry.
Gay Atkins, Broker-in-Charge at Coastal Development & Realty on Holden Beach, is working hard to make sure the white sandy beaches we all love remain pristine for generations to come. Currently serving on the Holden Beach Renourishment Association, Gay is excited about the progress the organization has made to raise funds for the renourishment and maintenance of Holden Beach. Formed over 10 years ago, the organization is currently fertilizing and planting Sea Oats, Beach Grass, and Bitter Pancium and has raised nearly $40,000 to cover the cost of the project. This fall, fencing will be added to enhance the project. Gay said she is thankful for the generosity of supporters dedicated to protecting the beach from potential weather elements.
